Starling was commissioned in late 2021, and recorded a few months later. Due to on-going COVID restrictions, the live premiere wasn't until the following spring, with an ensemble organized by Lisa.
The Aviary Quartet gave its live premiere of Starling at the Florida Flute Association's 47th Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida.
Starling pays homage to several aspects of starling flocks - their feathers, their flocking behaviors, and their calls. The work uses timbral trills and varied vibrato, as well as staggered harmonies to evoke the shifting textures and dynamic contrasts of starling murmurations.
